Baccarat Rules for Beginners — Complete Guide

Baccarat uses a unique card value system: • Ace: 1 point • 2–9: Face value (2 = 2 points, 7 = 7 points, etc.) • 10, Jack, Queen, King: 0 points The key rule: if a hand total exceeds 9, only the units digit counts. This is called 'modulo 10' or the 'baccarat rule'. Examples: • 7 + 3 = 10 → counts as 0 • 6 + 8 = 14 → counts as 4 • 9 + 5 = 14 → counts as 4 • 7 + 7 = 14 → counts as 4 • 5 + 4 = 9 → counts as 9 (the best possible hand) The maximum hand value is 9. A hand of 8 or 9 from the first two cards is called a 'natural' and wins automatically.

A 'natural' occurs when either the Player or Banker hand totals 8 or 9 from the first two cards. When a natural occurs: • No third cards are drawn • The higher natural wins • If both hands have the same natural total, it's a tie Natural 9 beats Natural 8. If both hands have Natural 9, it's a tie. If both have Natural 8, it's a tie. Naturals occur frequently in baccarat — roughly 34% of hands produce a natural. Different baccarat variants have slightly different rules: Punto Banco (most common): The standard version played at most online casinos. Drawing rules are fixed and automatic. Players have no decisions to make. Mini Baccarat: Identical rules to Punto Banco but played on a smaller table with lower betting limits. Faster pace. Chemin de Fer: A traditional European variant where players take turns being the Banker and can make decisions. Rarely found at online casinos. Baccarat Banque: Similar to Chemin de Fer but the Banker role is fixed. Very rare online. Lightning Baccarat (Evolution): Punto Banco rules with random multipliers applied to winning bets.
